In pulsed radiofrequency an electrical current is applied to a small area of nerve tissue to block the transmission of pain.

The doctor inserts a needle near to the nerve and a small electrode is threaded into the needle. A pulsed electrical current is passed through the electrode and this creates an electromagnetic field. This stops the nerve from transmitting pain signals to the brain. The procedure takes less than an hour.

The pain relief has been reported as lasting for 3 to 4 months and the procedure can be repeated.
