Chiropractic professionals believe that ailments are the result of disruptions of the nervous systems and the misalignment of the vertebrae of the backbone and pressures on the spinal cord.

Chiropractic is a therapy that aligns the backbone and other joints of the body when they become displaced. This is done through pressing and stretching therapy and “adjustments”. It is believed that the free flow of signals through the nervous system is disrupted when the joints of the spine press down on the nerves leaving the spine thus disrupting this flow of impulses. The result of this disruption of impulses can be a variety of ailments – not just back pain. A Chiropractor will massage and press the joints into place over a period of time that involves a few chiropractic sessions. Relief can be experienced immediately in a few patients but results do vary from individual to individual.

The Chiropractor works along the advise of the doctor treating the patient. Once the doctor determines the cause of the back pain he or she might refer the patient to a Chiropractor for some therapy.

Chiropractic has historically been considered as a somewhat “alternative” health care discipline, although it has gained more mainstream acceptance in recent decades. Chiropractors may also advise on nutrition, exercise and other lifestyle changes.
