Laminectomy is a surgical procedure that is performed to remove a part of the lamina, which is an arched shaped bone in the vertebrae. Laminectomy is a very basic surgical procedure and is usually performed to help Spinal Stenosis.

This removing or trimming the lamina creates more room for the spinal cord and nerves and so relieves the pressure on them. The operation may sometimes be done in conjunction with removing part of a disc or fusing some vertebrae.

Recovery from laminectomy depends on the type of surgery performed. It may take weeks or months to recover from a traditional laminectomy procedure and just days from the minimal laminectomy procedure.
