Good Posture For Lifting Heavy Objects
If you have lower back pain, you'd better not lift heavy objects. But often it cannot be avoided, and at such times it is really important for your back that you do it properly. Good lifting posture not just prevents back injury, but may actually relieve your lower back pain.
Instead of planning the job while carrying the load, try planning it beforehand. This reduces the time and distance you have to carry the load.
Hold the object you are lifting close to your body. Plant your feet firmly shoulder length apart. Keep your back straight and pull in your stomach. Bend your knees and straighten up with the load. In such a posture, you are effectively making your leg muscles (instead of back muscles) do all the work.
Other points to note -
* Don't bend forward at the waist.
* Don't twist your torso when reaching down for, lifting, or carrying the load.
* If you are even a little uncomfortable with the load, get someone to help.
