Default Do you really need back surgery?

In a recent article in GoodHousekeeping Magazine they noted "Of the 56 million Americans who have back pain, only 5 percent need surgery."

So even though you may have back pain, there's a small chance you'll need surgery.

The above article continued "Yet thousands more go under the knife and get no benefit - or end up worse." This article was published in the November 2009 issue. (interesting to see that in the online version this last sentence has been removed)

The same article also said "20% of back surgery patients have a repeat operation within 10 years"

Default Saudi King Abdullah successfully underwent back surgery

Today's news has a report that Saudi King Abdullah successfully underwent back surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital.

The 86 year old was suffering from a slipped disc and had been diagnosed with a blood clot pressing on the nerves in his back.

"The medical team recommended that he leaves for the U.S. to visit a spine-specialized medical center in order to complete medical examinations and for follow-up treatment," Health Minister Abdullah al-Rabeeah said during an interview Sunday with Saudi state television.
