Pictures of Proper Lifting Technique
The Mayo Clinic has a series of slides showing the proper technique for lifting objects.
They suggest one method is to have one knee on the floor and the other knee bent. The bent knee can also act as a platform once you've lifted part way up. The alternative is to start in a squat. The slides show each of these positions.
Whatever you do don't lift from a standing position with your waist bent and your knees locked.
