Default How To Get Relief From Back Pain

There are a lot of ways to get relief from back pain when it strikes.

    * Bed rest is the first thing to take if the pain is acute.

    * Hot and cold compress are useful too. An ice pack helps soothe the inflammation, while a warm compress loosens muscles and encourages circulation.

    * Chiropractors can provide pain relief in certain cases by realigning the spine.

    * Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese therapy that inserts needles into the skin at specific points to release endorphins, which are natural painkillers, in the body.

    * Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) is a system where weak electrical impulses are sent to nerves to block pain signals out.

    * Over the counter medicines like aspirin and ibuprofen relieve pain and inflammation. Doctors may also prescribe muscle relaxants and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

    * Epidural injections of steroids like cortisone are used as a last resort to provide relief with medicines.

    * Finally there are surgical procedures to treat chronic back pain.

From the above it is clear that there is no dearth of treatment options for low back pain. However, prevention is always better than cure, and it is best to take preventive steps at the slightest hint of back pain.

Nearly everything I've seen and read says that bed rest is not recommended anymore, unless it's for a very short time. It seems to be better to keep moving around and stay active and find some form of exercise that you're comfortable with. Walking is a great place to start.

Default Thanks for pointing it out!

What I wanted to say was just that. I mean, at the very initial stage, when you have this excruciating pain, I suppose you could lie down for a short period of time: that is also our instinctive reaction to a sudden attack of pain. However, when the cause of pain is figured out, keeping mobile is the best thing to keep the pain at bay.

    Thanks for pointing it out.

    Default Try Swimming!

If available, the best form of exercise for back pain is swimming. Not only is it great to stimulate blood circulation but, at the same time, it puts little if any impact on your back. It is a wonderfully therapeutic exercise as well. At my gym, anytime I would experience back pain, I would do about 20 laps of the breaststroke. This always made me feel a ton better. I should also point out all the brain chemicals (endorphins) released too in your body that give you natural back pain relief.

I am quiet skeptical with bed rest because some of the causes of having back pain is the kind of mattress we are using.
