How Long Has It Taken You To Get Diagnosed

Rate this Entry
After being in pain for so long now i have joined this back pain forum, It amazes me that a prolapsed disc sufferers have to wait so long to eventually get to an MRI scan, It can take up to 8months and sometimes more from seeing a doctor, Being referred to a consultant then a wait of a minimum of 5 weeks for a scan then another 4 weeks to get results from your consultant, That if you are a NHS patient. I think its ridiculous They don't know like we do how much pain we are really feeling. And being told if you pay £895 you can get a MRI scan in less than a week, but if you have no savings and are off work sick with no income how do expect people like me to pay, I am now on 6o MG MST and Gabapentin and still in mass pain, I was frightened to death by my consultant today, who says does not recomend me to have an opperation because of the risks of being in a wheelchair for life, bowl disorder, bladder disorder and more than likely the scar tissue would still press on the nerve after time, I give in .

Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear about your saga with getting an MRI.
Over here in the US, while health insurance is expensive, it does mean that the service is fast and so if people need an MRI then they can get them pretty much straight away. Of course, if you don't have health insurance that can be another story.

Did you see the post about More MRI's lead to more surgery

What else have you tried for your pain?

Geordie, I'm a nurse and the NHS are supposed to fast track their back injured staff to help get them back to work. That's the theory, in reality I'm waiting to be referred to the pain clinic for assessment who will be the people to refer me for MRI!
I have been off sick twice this year with back pain this time has been the longest period, all they've done is refer me to occupational health. My pay will drop to half pay in a couple of months and I don't know how Ill manage if something isn't done soon.

It took me about 3 months to get diagnosed with my Herniated Disc. I entered a depression somewhat giving up. But I had continued to pull through. I sold a bunch of things on Craigslist to be able to sustain my credit card debt. Along with that i was only working three days a week. which isn't much compared to the full-time hours i was receiving. I found out about this Decompression Scam, worth 5,000 dollars for treatment.
I felt uncomfortable every time i went into their office. They gave me an MRI which cost me a good 500 dollars. fortunately because my credit was barely being established "brand new" they did not approve me for financing. Still, That didn't stop them from trying to suck every last penny i had from my pocket. Anyway, I bought an inversion table which helps a lot (cheapest cost about $100). Started working a bit more. All this pain without Medication... imagine that. Pain persists but i pull through. Good luck and God bless.
