Is back pain really all in the mind?

Rate this Entry
Having suffered from acute sciatica I received emergency back surgery only to find that my lower back pain went through the roof when I came out of anaesthetic. I ended up on morphine just to cope with the terrible spasms.

A few people commented rather unhelpfully that it was all in my mind. I have done so much research to find a lasting cure. Being told it is in the mind when the physical pain is so real is so patrionising and unhelpful. We need to be considerate and open to all diagnoses ideas.

I have found that the best way forward for me and literally 1000's of people has been the theory of TMS, Dr JOhn SArno.

This is becoming more well known and we are doing a huge favour to people by spreading the news.

More next time

I completely understand about the "all in your mind" dianosis. If I had a pound for everytime someone has said that to me I'd be uber rich by now. It's suggestive that you have some conscious control over the matter and that you are doing it on purpose or for attention. I totally agree it's so patronising and unhelpful.!

I read somewhere on the net recently that Dr Sarno's TMS theory is all about the emotions whereas back pain is also to do with the physical and diet. Yes, there is a place for physical and diet ie the more acidic your body is the more pain prone you will be. However, TMS does NOT deny physical pain. It is, SArno says, one of the most severe pains known in clinical medicine the pain from TMS syndrome. The pain is CAUSED by oxygen deprivation to the area.

I dont think anyone can 'control' their back pain starting or flaring up or doing it on purpose. Having had it and living through you would NEVER be that desperate for attention in a 1000 years to 'give' yourself that sort of pain.

No the brain induces oxygen deprivation to the muscles in the back and the nerves through the autonomic nervous system. The reason, well it's unconscious emotional overload.

I will post more on this theory which I think is the Rolls Royce of back pain theories again

Thanks for the comment maybe one day those people who judge will be part of the back pain epidemic and will understand!
By the way my story is at www.lowerbackpainblog.com.Cheers!

It's been a while since I've researched Sarno's theory, but from what I remember, he addresses pain due to stress, and especially stresses we put on ourselves. In other words, avoidable stress.

I have just written a blog on a similar topic, please refer to my blog, and all that I can tell you is that my personal opinion is that when I was at my worst I was stressed out completely. I have dealt with the stress in my life and I have been able to keep my back pain under control. I did require surgery and had a discectomy and a lamanectomy, but I walked the next day, and was riding horses again for the first time in 20 years with in 6 months, depsite having nerve damage ( which eventually went away ). I truly believe in the connection to the mind in relation to the amount of pain you feel.

I had a laminectomy discetomy in sept 2009,surgery helped in some way, but for the most part the pain has gotten worst then before surgery.
many people told me that maybe its all in my head, but I know the pain Ifeel its real.
has anyone got better after a laminectomy-decetomy? I havebeen recovering for 14 months, and if it wasnt for the pain medication.
I think I wouldnt be here anymore, thanks for your input.
