In a paper published in Evidence Based Medicine (http://ebm.bmj.com/content/14/6/179.extract) they report on a randomised clinical trial of 641 patients aged 18–70 who were receiving treatments for chronic lower back pain.

Some patients received acupuncture, some received simulated acupuncture and some "usual care".

As the title says simulated acupuncture and real acupuncture both reduced low back pain dysfunction and symptoms.

Have you used acupuncture for back pain, how is it?

The problem is that in the study, the "simulated" points were over the real points and the needles placed partway through a little piece of foam, whereas in the "real" acupuncture, the needle penetrated through the foam pad into the skin.

The experimentors did not seem to understand the electrical nature of the body and acupuncture, as the needle would act like an antenna of sorts, and still influence the body.... much like walking past a radio or television antenna.... you don't even have to touch the antenna to clear up the signal.

And, animals respond well to acupuncture, which pretty much takes care of the "belief" part of the results.

Some people find that acupuncture treatment will reduce their back pain medications. The method is considered as safe and effective treatment if done by a certified acupuncture practitioner. However, it has possible side effects such as soreness, bleeding, infection or bruising. This type of treatment is not applicable to all people suffering from back pain. For instance, the treatment fails to relieve your back pain within a few weeks; it simply means that it may not be the right treatment for you. If you're considering acupuncture treatment, it is best to talk consult your doctor because he or she can help you in finding a reliable and certified acupuncturist.
