The first signal that your body sends about an impending back problem is generally pretty innocuous. It might appear to be just a pulled back muscle, expected to go away with a bit of rest or popping some analgesics.

But what seemed to be a mere muscle sprain may linger for quite a while. Worse, it might come back in a few months in a more painful form. Here are the back pain symptoms you should watch out for:

* Sciatic pain starts in the lower back and 'radiates' down the hip and back of the thigh and leg. In other words, it follows the path of the sciatic nerve.

* The leg goes numb, or at least weak.

* Walking, frequently changing position or lying down offers some relief, while the pain worsens if you sit or stand for long.

* There is a tingling sensation in the toes and feet.

* The pain becomes more intense if the spine is bent or twisted.

* The pain worsens with time.

It is best to consult a medical professional immediately if you experience the above symptoms.

Another way to tell the severity of your sciatica is simply tilting your head downward and trying to put your chin against your chest. Chances are if you are experiencing sciatica, you will not be able to perform this simple exercise without being in a lot of discomfort. And yes, I totally agree with Eric. If you are experiencing sciatica, you should consult a doctor immediately. Sciatica, in itself, is a symptom of another condition that needs to be diagnosed by a doctor.
